Cancer treatment using chemotherapy or other medicine that can be swallowed (pills or liquid medicine), injected, or given intravenously is known as medical oncology. Physicians who specialize in this area are called medical oncologists. The educational background for this specialty includes a degree from medical school, plus three years of internship and residency training. Many of the physicians at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders also completed an additional three years of specialized fellowship training.
Radiation oncology is another important area of cancer treatment. This is the treatment of cancer using radiation therapy. The Center offers advanced care through radiation therapy with IMRT and IGRT, considered the national standard for this type of treatment. Radiation oncologists are also graduates of medical school and three years of advanced training during an internship and residency.
A unique difference at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is the ease in which both medical oncologists and radiation oncologists work together, in a team effort for cancer patients. All medical records at our clinics are linked electronically. This means your doctors are aware of all treatment and test results from each medical professional involved in your care.
In addition to medical oncology and radiation oncology, The Center staff strongly believes that emotional and spiritual support is essential to carry out our mission of healing lives.
